MILLBROOK MULTIHULL FESTIVALJULY 16-18TH 2010This exciting event is sponsored by specialist brokers Multihull World with partners Multimarine Composites – exclusive builders of the Dazcat range – and the Multihull Centre. It will take place on and around Millbrook Lake, south east Cornwall, which has the greatest concentration of multihulls in the UK outside the South coast. As well as the boats that will be there especially for the event, there are hundreds of different vessels in the yards dotted around the Lake, making it a good place to compare different multihull designs. This exciting festival is for owners of catamarans and trimarans to share in a weekend of fun and sailing in the Plymouth area, including a charity race – the Royal Western Yacht Club’s Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit Race – on the Saturday (deadline for entry 6th July, email audrey for entry form). This is a fund-raising event, now in its 9th year and raises money for a wealth of good causes. We will be sponsoring the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, which cares for and looks after the education of young people with severe physical disabilities. Entry to the event is free, but please bring money for the bar and food for the barbecues. Donations will be solicited for a local charity (Shelterbox). Programme of events: Friday 16th July – welcome and BBQ at Insworke Mill, from 7pm (high water is at 9pm if you are coming by boat), and live music in the Boat House with a licensed bar. Tech talks from riggers, sail makers and boatbuilders in the back room at the Football Club. Saturday 17th July – Option to self enter the Eddystone Charity Pursuit Race, which starts at 9am for the slowest boats. Strictly a fun event, but some people will be in it to win. For those who prefer a more sedate Saturday we will be arranging a cruise-in-company – depending on weather – followed by an evening raft-up, and a sunset parade of sail back to Insworke Quay. For those owners who have room aboard, it may be an opportunity to share the sailing load with non-owners who have come along to the event to explore more about multihull sailing. Evening – BBQ/meze (each vessel to bring their own food) at Insworke Mill, and option of live music in Football Club, in company with the bikers that will be camping on the pitch. Slide shows will be running in the back room of the Club; a place to sit and talk, with handy access to the bar. Sunday 18th July – A guided walk round the boatyards and boatbuilding projects in Millbrook, starting at around 11am to allow for hangovers from the Saturday night fun. This is the first event of its kind to be arranged by us, so be prepared for last minute random changes and just enjoy the festival atmosphere. Hopefully we do it all again next year. You are welcome to turn up from Friday morning, though you might be put to work helping with preparations as the event does not start until the evening. We will be rafting up at the Insworke Mill Quay at the head to Millbrook Lake which, depending on numbers, could get rather full. If you need help the berthmaster's number is 07967 645205, otherwise just tie on to the end.
Boats will need to have left by Monday; if not it’s £10 a night to charity. Multihull World will be leaving Emsworth mid-week headed to Millbrook, ready for arrival on the Friday. If this sounds like your cup of tea and you'd like to cruise in company please drop us a line: mark@multihullworld.co.uk or call us on 01243 377 333. See you there!!

Broadblue 385 Handed Over to OwnerIt was a proud moment at Multihull World for us to hand over the first Broadblue 385 built and produced under our ownership. Broadblue 385 no. 37 “Coll” was officially handed over to her owner this month, and left Emsworth bound for Northern Ireland. We were exceptionally pleased with the final boat, and it has given us great confidence to take our improvements to the quality of the build forward into future vessels. The owner commented “I am very pleased with the boat and the fantastic service I’ve received at Multihull World. You are a lovely family-run company and should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished.” Coll, the owner and crew left later that day for Yarmouth, and called us in the evening to report a fantastic sail all the way down. We wish Charles and Christine many happy hours onboard Coll in future, cruising in their home-grounds of Ireland or the isles of Scotland. If you would like to own a new Broadblue 385, build slot no. 40 is currently available. Please email ken@multihullworld.co.uk for more info, pricing or spec sheets.
Outremer Cup by Lesley HarrisHaving participated at the OUTREMER CUP 2009 and experienced sailing at 18 knots on an OUTREMER 64, I thought nothing can beat this – but it has! This was the 16th Outremer Cup and it is getting better and better. In total 16 Outremers met at la Grande Motte for the Regatta from the smallest at 40ft to the largest at 64ft, with several just verging on the start of a grand voyage to Brazil, Tahiti, Senegal or the Caribbean. It was also the first time that the new model, the Outremer 49, participated. The weather was brilliant starting at 15knots+ on day 1 dropping to pockets of barely above 2 knots in the afternoon. Day 2 saw 20-30 knots morning and afternoon. Day 3 was at risk of cancellation but the morning presented us with a similar 20-35 knots with 40+ forecast for the afternoon – by then we would all be back in the bar so no problem! with winds gusting at up to 35 knots it was a real opportunity for the Outremer to show their worth – we could experience their sailing ability from both being on a different boat each day (an Outremer 40, 45 & 49) and also from looking around us at the boats coming up on our stern or those that we were passing. No matter what the sea conditions they just sliced through the waves. – I saw 20.2 knots on the log of Jumax (an Outremer 40) and to top that, the delightful wife of the owner presented us at that very moment with hot pizza slices from their oven! Moemiti, 100m away, started “smoking” with the spray coming off the bow and running down the side of the boat, like a steam train. Really exhilarating! (At this point I do have to admit that you can get wet on a multihull – certainly at 20 knots in those conditions, in a 40ft Outremer with tiller steering, you do find that there is a certain amount of spray!) One should remember also that this was not aggressive, win at all costs, racing. These boats are often family owned with husband or wife at the helm with sons and daughters as crew. In fact the American catamaran Ma Bête won a prize for having the most guests on board sailing in these conditions – these guests included the wife, son and daughter of the owner of the Outremer Company + grandmother + two non sailors! What a responsibility!! At the end of each day’s event was a welcoming drink and food + music, all with the compliments of the boatyard. On the final day there was the presentation of prizes – in fact all 16 boats won a prize (diplomacy for you!) from a prize for the boat with the most potential (Alizé – as she had just had a new owner who was getting used to his boat!), the fastest (Malisi), the oldest “lady” (Lucille), the best cooking (Brazil) and so on…… Truly a great family of boat owners who have recognised first and foremost the sailing merits of the Outremer and enjoy being on the sea. |
FORMAT 400 Cabrio RTIR Success! Our entrant this year in the Round the Island Race on June 19th was chosen as the Format 400 Cabrio, a light, sporty, bridgedeck cruiser with a performance pedigree and berths onboard for 8. The crew were Mark Jarvis, our MD, Mike Davis, our Director, Ken Walker, our Brokerage Manager, all skippered by Andrezj Aarminski, the Polish builder and owner of the boat. In the Bridgedeck Multihull Class were many fierce competitors, including the Heavenly Twins which won last year on handicap, a Prout Event (which is on our brokerage click here), and a Gunboat 62! Luckily the Format’s ease of handling and shallow draft (not to mention the skipper + crew’s expertise?) won out, and they finally crossed the line a little before 2PM after a respectable 8 and a half hours underway. We have to say congratulations to all of the competitors – 9 of the 10 in the Bridgedeck class finished the race, and five of those have recently passed through Emsworth either on the brokerage or here for moorings. This year with the online tracking system it was great to be able to keep an eye on competitors whilst racing via GPS, and not with a pair of binoculars as in the past! We are looking forward to next year already to see if we can defend our title!
